Because I am a Singaporean...

Yesterday, as i was waiting for my sister to go home, i wandered around (the now very hip) Whitesands trying to kill half an hour. I finally concluded that i should go and pay my super overdue hp bill instead of emptying my bank account further. Boy, did i manage to kil half an hour. I had to wait 20 mins at the AXS machine, because infront of me was a 50plus yrs old uncle who did not quite understand how to operate the machine.

He was pretty good with the whole payment process until the part where he had to insert his atm card to pay his close to $3k credit card bill. He wanted to get a receipt from the machine, but he kept pressing the "eReceipt" button and it kept bringing him to the "Please enter your email address" screen, which he stared at for eternity, because he didn't know what the hell they were asking for. After he was done staring at the screen, he would bend down to the receipt dispenser to collect his print out, but of course nothing came out since it was supposed to be an eReceipt. Then he went back to staring at the screen which timed out, and went back to the payment screen again.

He repeated this entire process like 5 times before he finally turned around to ask me "Sorry, how come like that ah?". I replied, "Uncle, you never press pay. That's why there's no receipt. Anyway the button that you pressed won't give you a receipt" He then said, "ohhh...you mean i haven't paid? then how?"

So i stepped up and pressed the "Nets" button and told him to insert his atm card and pin, and then stepped back so that he wouldn't think that i was peeking at him keying in his pin. He then waited for damn long before some red message appeared and then the screen went back to the payment screen again. After repeating this new process three times, he turned around and asked me again " How come cannot ah?" I then asked him to try again, and i read the message that popped up and said, "Uncle, the daily limit of your atm card is lesser than the amount that you are trying to pay. You can only pay part of your bill." He then said, "Ohhh..." and continued to pay the entire $3k two more times before he turned around to say to me "Sorry, you go ahead...i pay another day"

I smiled at him and said ok but inside i was thinking "basket..why don't you pay part of it first...i'm sure you're gonna do this whole thing again tmr. bet you didn't get my explanation."

When i got home, i told my sister the entire story, and then she asked me..

sis: "how come you knew what was going on the entire time?"
me: "because i was peeking over his shoulder the entire time...haha!"
sis:" hahaha...you are so kaypo! then why you never help him earlier"

to which i gave the best answer on earth...

me:"because i am a Singaporean...I MIND MY OWN BUSINESS"
sis: "HHAHAHAHAHHAHA!! GOOD ONE!"

Not that i am proud of what i did, but there are just some times...no sorry...make that many times, when i can't be bothered to help people. I only help when asked to.

Other reasons why i never bother to be a good samaritan:

  1. Many years ago, i gave up my seat on the bus to an old lady, but she said that she was alighting soon and told me to sit back down. When i turned around some fucker already sat in my seat. So i had to stand from bishan all the way back to pasir ris.
  2. A few years later i gave up my seat to a mother who was carrying her daughter, who also refused to sit down, and once again another fucker rushed to sit in what was my seat. This time round i had to stand from clementi to pasir ris, and i was freaking tired because i was in school from like 9am to 6pm.
  3. Today, i gave up my seat to an old lady, who SAT DOWN and smiled and said thank you, but i almost lost my balance and fell flat on my butt while trying to give up my seat to her, because the train jerked. At least she was nice and polite.
  4. Once i picked up some stuff for this person who dropped her things on the floor and she didn't say thank you.
  5. I have held the lift door for numerous people who have never thanked me...fuckers..their parents never teach them manners.
  6. My friend tried to help a man who was having difficulty walking once and he started touching her hands...fucking pervert.
  7. My sister was about to give up her seat to this mother with her daughter who just entered the train, when she overheard the mother saying to her daughter, "don't bother looking around la, like anyone will be so kind as yet as to give up their seat to us". So my sister planted her butt back on the chair and even grew roots on it, and was glad that she didn't stand up earlier.
  8. I have given way to numerous drivers on the road who never thank me.
  9. Oh the most classic...i met a pervert on the bus once and when i asked for help from the girl next to me, she gave me a nervous laughter and looked away, and the woman behind me just stared like as though she was watching some amusing movie.

So you see...instead of making an effort to be nice to the people around me, and receiving nothing in return, i might as well just not do anything.

If my dad gets wind of this...he will certainly embark on yet another one of his "Singapore will die in the future with youths like you"...
